About Meatpacking District
Not many would pair a name like the 'Meatpacking District' with the reputation of being one of the most popular and entertaining neighborhoods in New York City, but it has proven time and again to be true. The Meatpacking District received its name in the early 1900's being home to 250 slaughterhouses and packing plants. The evolution of this area took an unpredictable turn when it became known as the center for prostitution and drug dealing in the 1980's. Thankfully, what many would think to be nothing short of a miracle, the Meatpacking District was transformed once again, but this time into a neighborhood mixed with talented designers, restaurants and nightclubs. Shopping in the Meatpacking District is an event in itself with so many designers to choose from.
